So, firstly, teaching in my school is getting worse and worse every year. And most of the teachers legit suck at teaching so me and most of my friends are basically self studying. So I decided to ask my questions here since when I ask my teachers they tell me that they’re not sure and will let me know once they find out about it... and never even touch on that again.

So question #1:
In high school, do your semester 1 grades affect your final report card grades? I’m asking because because, for example for physics HL, not only the grade boundaries are different in semester 1 and 2, but also the weighings are calculated differently (in sem 1, hw, class tests, lab reports, and semester exams are 25% each of the semester grade. In sem 2, hw is 10%, tests are 35% and etc). So idk how they’re calculate the final grade if semester 1 grades do affect them.

Q #2:
Do the teachers have the right to change the pre-set boundaries? Our science department already has pre-set boundaries for grades 11 and 12. However, the chem (I’m not in chem) teacher lowered his semester exam boundaries after he saw that only 2-3 people got a 6 and no one got a 7. After he changed, a lot of students got bumped up to a 7 (in some cases students who got a 5 ended up with a 7). On the other hand, my physics teacher didn’t even consider changing the boundaries even tho only 2-3 got a 5, the rest got below 5. So I feel like it’s unfair that one class changed the boundaries while the other one didn’t even tho they’re in the same science department. Is it worth talking to a teacher and asking him to change grade boundaries?

Q #3:
Teacher wants to grade a lab report as a semester 2 task, even tho we did that in semester one, is he allowed to do that?

Q #4:
What to do if your teacher is like really bad... like idk how else to say that... really bad. We found more than 5 mistakes in his grading of the semester exam and everyone (7 out of 7 students) wants a different teacher. At this point, we’re basically self studying in his class with headphones on, and he lectures to... no one. Pls help.

Q #5:
If my predicted grades are high (about 39-40) but my gpa isn’t 4.0, do I still have a chance to get into top tier uni considering if I do decently in SATs? My gpa is looking like 3.8. Would that be enough if my essays are good?

Sorry for a long essay (why can’t I write this much in an essay?). But I hope for your help. Any help/tips is appreciated. Good luck to me and my fellow IB students.

#1 if the percentages you’re talking about are what is seen in managebac that don’t worry too much about it. As far as I know all that matters is your grades collected together for all terms and finding the best fitting mark.
#2: grade boundaries depend on the teacher, not on the class. If the teacher decides to be nicer that’s up to them if he decides to be fair than again it’s up to him. If the boundaries that were changed are boundaries for mocks than that’s not helping you know the real mark you deserve (if that was an IB test no one would change the boundary so you could get a better grade)
#3 as far as i know, no. Unless he pushed the deadline than ig he can. Otherwise that shouldn’t happen because you might have improved a lot in term 2 and done shit on term 1, so that grade shouldn’t be set on term as it reflects your work during that semester
#4 one thing would be complaining as much as you can. Definitely ask the teacher to get his ass up and do his job, but write a paper to your school administration and send it. Get the signature of as many people as possible, so your words get through. Make sure you write every complain in the most academic form. It worked for my classmates and me in 9th grade and i’m pretty much in a really bad school too
#5 ofc you can. Top tier unis care about what you also do outside the school not only academics. You still have time to fix your gpa as well so work hard.

@jeddd__c thanks a lot. Also one more question. When students talk about their gpa, is that from all four years of high school? Or is it only your junior/senior year of school?

If it is from all four years, do unis look at the improvement? Because freshman and sophomore year I really didn’t care about my grades and my gpa was around 3.5, but now my gpa is around 3.8-4.0. So, would my freshman and sophomore year gpa hurt me during the admission process?

I believe they look only at the last gpa and so your improvement and where you are right now matters the most. You still will have to check because I don’t live in America so we don’t do GPA here
