Alright, so since I am taking sciences and psychology (meaning that the IAs deadlines are pretty late) the EE was the first academic paper I had to ever write. It was a hell lot of struggle just writing it, but I really enjoy chemistry and also the fact that the sciences do not have a minimum word count made it not as stressful. Anyways, the first draft was sent in and I got feedback from my teacher, that said that it was a very good first draft. She told my to change minor things but overall it was really good, BUT IT ONLY HAD 2150 words!!!! And while writing my IAs now, my Math IA for example has 2400 words.

Will IB think that my EE is basically an IA?

You should not be submitting an EE with 2150 words. The general consensus is between 3500-4000 words; anything below that will definitely get you marked down. The IB doesn’t care how many words you have for your Math IA, as long as it’s within 12 pages.

In addition, an IA and EE have very different marking schemes and I strongly recommended you refer back to them as you’re writing your EE/IA.

Keep in mind that your teacher told you your EE was of good quality merely since it was a first draft, not a final version.

@SharvinRocks our teacher said that there is no real minimum word count in the natural sciences, it is all about quality. We have even had chem essays on 2500 words scoring an A. Last year, one guy was marked down because his chemistry essay was overdone (he had so much information that some of it barely was relevant)

@whatislife Wow, I’ve never heard of that—our school has always demanded a 3500 word limit minimum, but I just Googled it and you are indeed spot on, sorry about my incorrect info!

But then; I don’t understand the question you’re asking us, “Will the IB think my EE is basically an IA?” well no, if the front cover says ‘Extended Essay’, they’ll grade it as an EE and if it says IA, they grade it as an IA... Also, EE’s are usually uploaded onto IBIS by the students whilst IA’s are uploaded by the teachers. Keep in mind, at least in our school.

@SharvinRocks what i meant was that i could most probably write about the same thing in a simple chemistry IA instead - like it feel as if my EE has IA quality, you know?

I’m also writing my EE in chemistry and I don’t understand how you can have that few words. I’d say keep writing. Read exemplars that have gotten an A, look at the criteria and write as much as possible within the 4000 word limit. Since there’s no minimum word count, don’t write BS but I also think that you should use as many of the words as you can. If anything, expand on your evaluation, critical thinking is like 12 out of 34 or so marks
